An update on the NIT bracket, in case you’re looking for even more college basketball

The NIT has made it entirely through the first round, and is just starting to move through its second round matchups. They’ll be taking place mainly on Sunday and Monday. But, in case you were starved for upsets during the first two days of the NCAA Tournament, we’ve had quite a few in the NIT tournament so far. The biggest just rocked the first game of the second round.

Syracuse missed out on the NCAA Tournament this year, despite a collection of quality wins, thanks to an 18-14 record and some really poor losses. In a fit of humor — or divine providence — the NIT bracket matched No. 1 seed Syracuse up with UNC Greensboro in the first round after Jim Boeheim had some choice words about the town while ranting about the ACC Tournament venue. Syracuse avoided the irony in the first game, winning 90-77.

But in their second round matchup against Ole Miss, Syracuse was upset, losing to the 5th-seeded Rebels by a score of 85-80. As one of the strongest teams in the field by KenPom and resume, an engaged Syracuse squad had to be considered one of the favorites to come away with the championship. Instead, they couldn’t get past a team that finished 7th in the SEC.

Terence Davis almost single-handedly buried the Orange, hitting 11 of his 14 shots and six of his seven attempts from deep. His Rebels will move on to face the winner of the Georgia Tech-Belmont game, which will take place tomorrow at 12 PM.

Two of the other 1-seeds in the tournament remain, with Illinois State and Iowa still trying to march to the championship game in MSG. But Syracuse is out, and their season is done. Jim Boeheim will have deal with his – and his team’s – meltdown this offseason, along with swirling rumors about the timing of his impending retirement.

If you’re looking for more upsets, intrigue, and college basketball, follow along with the NIT Tournament. We’ll keep you posted here as the bracket moves long.
