After a pitch that came high and tight and nearly hit him, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes blasted a two-run home run over the center field wall to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead that ultimately held up as the final score.
More is being made of the “brush back” pitch than should be, frankly. While Cespedes certainly had to feel good to come through on the pitching immediately following one that almost hit him, he was not the subject of some tense or controversial moment.
Jonathan Broxton was the pitcher for the Reds at the time. Not only did he have no reason to dust Cespedes, but his catcher’s target was on the outside corner. Like so many pitchers before him, and like you on a golf course, most likely, Broxton simply had his front shoulder fly open and so the fastball ran in on Cespedes. Other than that, there is nothing to see here.
The Red Sox added Cespedes because they had a desperate need to improve the offensive output from their outfielders. Even in a small sample size and in games that don’t matter, it has to be nice for them to see this type of swing from Cespedes.
