Giancarlo Stanton Rumors: Los Angeles Dodgers positioned to trade for Stanton?
By Hayden Kane
There is a trend that can be annoying and often insufferable for fans of small market MLB teams when it comes to trade rumors for their star players: even when there has been little to no discussion of a trade that would send the player in question to a big market team, national writers will essentially try to will a trade into happening by saying that it is a “good fit.”

That has been happening with Colorado Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki this season, and it has been happening for over a year now with Miami Marlins’ superstar right fielder Giancarlo Stanton. The rumors linking Stanton to the Boston Red Sox have long existed, even though the mechanics of an actual deal make it quite unlikely.
With that in mind, we consider the opinion of ESPN’s Buster Olney that the Los Angeles Dodgers would be the team in the best position to trade for Stanton if the Marlins went down that path, something they might be forced to do eventually (subscription required). What is different, however, is the fact that there might actually be a fit with the Dodgers.
Granted, Los Angeles has absolutely no need for an outfielder as currently constructed, but with some maneuvering and a willingness to trade top prospects in a blockbuster deal, they could actually be a realistic candidate to pull off a trade because of their wealth of prospects. Furthermore, they would have the deep pocketbooks to extend Stanton a contract offer in the neighborhood of $250 million if required.
We are still a long way from the Marlins actually getting serious about trading Stanton, but if and when they do, the Dodgers will exist as a real possibility and it is not just the hopes of writers who want him in a bigger market.
