Fantasy Football Week 3 waiver wire pickups: Top 5 TE’s

facebooktwitterreddit

The tight end position used to be a throw-away in fantasy football, but as offenses have evolved having a productive option at the position has gone from a luxury to a necessity. As offensive schemes change and injuries occur, there are some nice emerging options at TE to help owners who may need to hit the waiver wire this week to get some help in filling that roster spot

For the sake of all our waiver wire posts, all players listed are owned in less than 50% of ESPN leagues. That means that two big names–Antonio Gates and Delanie Walker– aren’t on this list even though they would be my first choices if available (which they are in over 20% of leagues as of Wednesday morning).

If you have a specific question about a TE on your waiver wire or whether or not you should make a move, you can ask always call out your questions @FansidedFantasy on twitter.  I’ll do my best to answer as many questions as possible as quickly as I can to help you get your roster in the best place it can be headed into week three.

Here are my top five tight ends from the waiver wire heading into week 3:

31. If you’re looking for more of a season-long solution at TE, Donnell is a nice option due to his continued role in the Giants passing attack.  Like Paul, he’s led his team in receiving in each of the first two weeks after finishing with 81 yards on seven catches in week 2 against Arizona.  Donnell doesn’t have high upside like the first and third options on this list, but he should be a steady contributor each week and can be a help to owners in need especially in PPR leagues.. 2.2% owned. Week 3 vs Texans. Larry Donnell. 2. player

3.4% owned. Week 3 @ Dolphins. Travis Kelce. 3. player. 124. After a quiet week 1, Kelce delivered on his promise with a nice week 2 against the Broncos catching four passes for 81 yards.  He’s one of the Chiefs’ best downfield playmakers and should be more involved in the offense going forward.  He is still competing with Anthony Fasano for playing time but look for his role to continue to grow as he plays his first season in the NFL after missing his rookie year due to injury.  Kelce has huge upside but there are questions as to when he can deliver enough to be a weekly start in 10-team leagues

Flying a bit under the radar, Cook has turned in two solid games of four catches each finishing with 56 and 46 yards the first two weeks.  He’s likely to stay right around those numbers most games this year and could also develope into more of a red zone target as well.  In the first two weeks of the season, Dallas has been destroyed by opposing tight ends.  Vernon Davis caught a pair of touchdowns against them to open the season and Delanie Walker gashed them for 142 yards and a touchdown last week.  If you’re straight streaming a tight end, this is the week to see what Cook can do for you even though his upside is unknown in a still searching St. Louis offense.. 3.2% owned. Week 3 vs Cowboys. Jared Cook. 4. player. 51

5. player. 42. In the wake of Vernon Davis’s injury, the 49ers tight end that looked most ready to seize the opportunity to excel was Derek Carrier who caught three passes for 41 yards Sunday night against Chicago.  Carrier could play a much larger role this week if Davis is sidelined in what should be a great matchup against the Cardinals.  Arizona allowed more points to opposing fantasy tight ends than any other team in the league last season and doesn’t seem to have fixed the problem so far this year.  If Carrier gets Davis’s normal targets, he’s a good one-week flier who could pay off in the short-term.  If you own Davis, he’s a nice handcuff for this week.. 0.2% owned. Week 3 @ Cardinals. Derek Carrier
