In 2013, the Detroit Pistons signed Atlanta Hawks’ free agent forward Josh Smith to a four-year, $54 million deal.
Many questioned the deal at the time because the Pistons already had Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe on the roster. Now that Monroe has signed the Pistons’ qualifying offer and will be with the team for at least one more season, the move is still being questioned. Many have speculated that the Pistons could trade Josh Smith.
Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders doesn’t believe the Pistons will be able to deal Josh Smith unless he has a big start to the season.
"Josh Smith is a bit tougher. They’ve had trade talks involving him, but I’m just not sure a deal makes sense right now because Smith’s trade value is so low. The perception of Smith has changed A LOT over the last few years. If Smith plays well before the deadline, it’s possible that he helps his stock and gets moved, but I just don’t think teams are interested in landing him right now, especially with that big contract."
Josh Smith has always been a very talented athlete but his decision-making, mostly his shot selection, have often come into question. If the Detroit Pistons can move Josh Smith, there’s a good chance they will.
Smith averaged 16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 41.9% from the field, 26.4% from three and 53.2% from the charity stripe last season. In his career he has averaged 15.5 point, 7.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.1 blocks and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 45.9% from the floor, 27.9% from three and 64.3% from the charity stripe.
