NHL: Seth Griffith, 3 Stars Of The Week
By Mike Majeski
Who are the three stars of the sixth week of NHL action?
This is the sixth edition of the NHL Three Stars of the Week and we will recognize three players who had outstanding performances during the NHL’s third week of regular season action. Check back every Sunday for a new list of three stars for the previous week’s play.
No. 1 Star: Seth Griffith
Seth Griffith didn’t even have to score another goal this season (he has, yesterday against the Carolina Hurricanes), his place in countless numbers of top 10 goal compilations is set. Griffith blocked a shot to start the breakout and crossed into the New Jersey Devils zone. Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky spun Griffith around as he approached the goal crease. At this point any mortal would lose the puck and it would roll helplessly into the goaltenders pads – but Seth Griffith is no mortal. Griffith stayed with the puck and backhanded it through his own legs and passed Cory Schneider – a double five hole goal. Call it lucky (or impossible, as heard on the Bruins call) – it was split second creative thinking and it paid off big for Griffith and the Boston Bruins. Boston went on to win the game 4-2. Griffith has five goals and two assists so far this season.
No. 2 Star: Martin Hanzal
Say it with me: Hanzal so hot right now – or at least he was against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night. Hanzal got the Coyotes on the board first with a goal fifteen minutes in the first period. Late in the second with the Coyotes up 1-0, it was Hanzal who would score again…or did he? Even Hanzal was unsure if his second goal would count, as he tipped it in with the blade of his raised stick and he is 6′ 6″. It did appear to be pretty close to being over the cross bar. Surprisingly, Toronto ruled in favor of the Coyotes and Hanzal had his second goal of the night. He then won the subsequent face-off and found himself on a 2 on 1 rush and beat Ryan Miller on his blocker side, completing the natural hat-trick.
No 3. Star: Carey Price
It appears that Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens are back on the right track. They have now won four games in a row, all on the back of outstanding goaltending from Carey Price. After a 31 save effort (one goal against) against the Minnesota Wild last Saturday, Price followed it up with a 29 save shutout of the Winnipeg Jets – the first of his season. The Winnipeg Jets entered the game on an eight game points streak, Price and the Canadiens brought an end to that. Price allowed one goal against the Boston Bruins two nights later and three goals in a 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the first time he allowed more than one goal in game since November 4th. Prior to their winning streak, the Canadiens had found themselves in a bit of a rough patch in their season, losing four of their previous five games. It was clear that any type of rebound would have to start with Price, and so far that appears to be the case.
