Brandon Pettigrew says he was never given an explanation as to why a pass interference call was erased and nullified late in the fourth quarter.

The biggest play of the NFC Wild Card game between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions wasn’t a touchdown or a game winning field goal — it was a flag that was picked up by officials after a penalty was called. The penalty in question was one that would have given the Lions critical first down at a crucial point in the game.

Instead of having a pass interference call go their way, the Lions saw the flag picked up despite the fact that the penalty had already been called.

While this inspired a slew of conspiracy theories on social media that stem back to Dean Blandino partying with Stephen Jones, it has raised many questions about just why the flag was picked up. Replays seemed to suggest a text book pass interference penalty and the length of time in which the flag was thrown to when it was picked up only further supports conspiracy theories.

Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who was the victim in the pass interference non-call, said after the loss that he was never given an explanation of the call and why it was reversed after so much time.

This silence by the NFL and officials on the field will only give conspiracy theorists further validation for wearing the tinfoil hats they are right now. An explanation will eventually come, but the call being reversed was a horrible look for NFL officiating and the silence both immediately after and in the long term on why the call flag was picked up will be something that only blackens the bruise that the entire incident left on the weekend and on the Cowboys win.
