There was tension between Rob Ryan and the New Orleans Saints in 2014, and the team has hired his replacement to keep him on notice this upcoming season.

Rob Ryan has officially been put on notice by the New Orleans Saints. After a season in which the team missed the playoffs with a losing record — something that is unheard of in New Orleans — Rob Ryan looks to be the first head to roll if things get off to a bad start in 2015.

Ryan and head coach Sean Payton clashed more than once in the 2014 season and did so in a very visible manner on the sidelines of games. The Saints just don’t lose the way they did in 2014 which is why the team is ready to jettison Rob Ryan if things aren’t better. Drew Brees can’t do it all, as was demonstrated in 2014, and the hiring of Dennis Allen is a move made directly to put pressure on Ryan this season.

According to Saints beat writer Larry Holder, if Rob Ryan struggles in 2015, the Saints will not hesitate to fire him and promote Dennis Allen to defensive coordinator.

Allen was most recently the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, but was himself put on notice and subsequently fired for not winning a single game this season. The Raiders eventually won a couple of great games under the leadership of Tony Sparano — including wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

Rob Ryan’s defense was one of the worst in the NFL as he seems to be sliding the wrong direction on the coaching totem pole. He was fired in Dallas for not beefing up the defense — and for drafting Morris Claiborne — and he was in St. Louis for all of five minutes before bolting to New Orleans for a better job.

It may have been a better job, but the results were the same crappy results they’ve been from Ryan for the better part of his career. He continues to get work because of his boisterous personality and because of the success of his father Buddy and brother Rex, but things need to change for Rob Ryan to keep his job and for him to keep getting them at the NFL level.
