Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin said that unlike Jerry Rice, he never used stickum on his gloves.

Jerry Rice is considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history, though there is some interesting new developments in the pass catchers career. Rice admitted he sprayed stickum on his gloves during his playing days, something that was considered illegal.

That has led fans to speculate whether other NFL greats used stickum on their gloves, like Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin. He went on New York sports radio station WFAN and declared that he never used it.

“I love Jerry Rice, but that’s what everybody says. ‘Oh, everybody did it.’ That’s the oldest defense in the world,” Irvin said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I didn’t use stickum. I never used stickum, didn’t need stickum, didn’t believe in stickum. I wouldn’t do it. Troy (Aikman) would go off on me if I put stickum on his footballs. You see what I’m saying? Stop asking me this junk. I didn’t feel like I should answer it. I have not answered one (tweet) on it.”

Irvin went as far as saying that no Dallas Cowboys players used it in his career with the team.

Of course the gloves receivers use presently in the NFL have a considerably greater amount of stick than previous gloves. You could make the argument that it balances out with the advent of technology in modern day gloves.

How else do you explain the number of mind-boggling catches we see in the NFL these days, like this physics defying catch from New York Giants rookie Odell Beckham Jr.
