Dez Bryant is in hot water over a video that allegedly shows him getting violent in 2011 — and he’s not happy about what he sees as a betrayal.

Domestic abuse and violence from football players is something that has taken center stage in the public eye this past year thanks to the rash of cases that have popped up involving prominent figures in the NFL. It wasn’t just a year where a few players were suspended for beating up women and children, superstars like Adrian Peterson and Greg Hardy were suspended for the season while Pro Bowler Ray Rice lost his job — maybe forever.

There is a dangerous line being towed here where these cases need to be brought to light but it’s a situation where players are wide open to extortion and blackmail. That’s dangerous and it’s what Dez Bryant seems to be claiming is happening to him as news has surfaced that a ‘Ray Rice-Style’ video of him exists and is going to be released.

According to reports, the video is stalling contract talks between Bryant and the Cowboys and could jeopardize his career. No one has seen the video so it’s hard to say what is includes and what the impact will be, but Dez Bryant is wasting no time in defending himself and calling out those who have ‘betrayed’ him.

Bryant tweeted that he needs to be given a chance to tell his unfiltered and uncensored version of the story on Twitter in what has become a deleted tweet.

This is a dangerous line to tow, as players need to be held accountable and exposed for abusive situations they’ve been in. But if Bryant is hinting that he’s being betrayed in the sense that someone is making this up to ruin him, that’s just as dangerous.

There was a controversial episode of The Newsroom that begged this question not long ago and it clearly is as relevant now as it was then. Everyone needs to reserve judgement before reacting to a situation we’re all hearing about second and third hand, but this is an issue that needs to get sorted out sooner rather than later.
