The Kentucky Wildcats watched their perfect season end in the Final Four, but John Calipari is back on Twitter to defend his players the their 38-1 record.

John Calipari may not be in the national championship game, but he’s still going to be one of the most talked about people of the weekend and into the college basketball offseason. He nearly brought Kentucky to a 40-0 season, falling just two games shy of that mark.

The question so many have now is whether or not he’s going to return in 2015-16 to coach Kentucky back to the Final Four and possibly to a title.

That’s a question that has been asked of his players too, as guys like Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison and Willie Cauley-Stein all returned from last year and some fans are hoping they’re hold overs yet again. That’s unprecedented for Kentucky, as it’s long been the school of one-and-done players, but could John Calipari really convince them to come back again?

He may not be motivated by that alone, but Calipari went on a Twitter rant that is hard to see as anything other than a possible call to arms for another run at a title in 2015-16 for his guys.

This is both sad yet hopeful for Kentucky fans all over the country and the world.

It’s sad in that John Calipari was so distraught over the loss that he needed to go to mass to set his mind straight — even if it’s Easter and he was planning on going anyways. But there’s a lot of hope in these words and there’s hope that it’s not all a line of B.S.

The NBA will be calling Calipari’s name loudly this offseason and he could be enticed to return to the one arena of his career where he’s been an utter and complete failure. He could go the Pete Carroll route and jump from a legendary college career to a legendary pro career, but there’s a decent chance that doesn’t happen.

All of it hinges on what happens with his players. Calipari doesn’t have to go back to the NBA to be a success — he’s already a success right now. Coach K never went to the pros, Tom Izzo will never go to the pros and there’s no reason John Calipari needs to either.

If the Harrison twins want to come back for another season, and he con convince Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns to return, then we very well could be looking at a potential college basketball legacy. They haven’t won anything yet, but if the school of one-and-dones can convince their core to come back for another ride, then this has all the makings of a story that Calipari can throw in everyone’s face when they bring up his failure at the NBA level.

Of course, asking a slew of lottery picks to come back for another year of college is a tall order, but if Calipari can resist the urge to make the leap, then that’s a great selling tool to his players.
