Troy Tulowitzki

Team: Colorado Rockies

Stats: .319/.354/.479, 8 HR, 41 RBI

Like Todd Frazier, the consent out of Colorado is that Rockies owner Dick Monfort doesn’t want to trade the face of the franchise, much like he chose to hang on to Todd Helton rather than trade the Rockies’ icon. However, like Helton, this would be short-sighted for the Rockies and there may not be a better time to flip Troy Tulowitzki.

With $94 million due over the next five seasons (including a team options buy-out in 2021), Tulowitzki’s contracts is one of the most lopsided in all of baseball, carrying the shortstop  through his age-36 season and weighs down a franchise that would be better served to allocate those funds into the pitching staff. Given Troy’s declining range at the position and his past health concerns, there is some debate whether or not the contract could even be moved.

Alas, there is one team that would make complete sense in any potential deal for Tulowitzki and that is the New York Yankees. As mentioned with Segura, the Yankees have an obvious need to address at shortstop, especially with Didi Gregorius becoming a major disappointment. Additionally, New York has never shied away from big money deals for star players and there is no doubt that Tulowitzki’s bat would play well in Yankee Stadium, ensuring that there is no drop off from leaving Coors Field. Given the Yankees’ need, this is a get-out-of-jail free card for the Rockies that they’d be smart to take.

It all comes down to whether Dick Monfort want to get out of jail or not.
