The Offense

One of the big reasons the Yankees are in first place right now is because of their offense. The Yankees are second in runs, doubles, homers, total bases, and OPS. A lot of that has to do with the good health and resurgence of Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez.

Teixeira is fourth in the AL in OPS. Rodriguez is fifth. Teixeira is second in the AL in RBI. Rodriguez is tied for 12th. Teixeira is fourth in home runs. Rodriguez is eighth.  Those two guys are carrying a big load, but it isn’t all about them.

Jacoby Ellsbury is finally healthy and Brett Gardner made his first All-Star team this season and sits fourth in the league in runs. Those two at the top of the lineup are a dangerous combination and help ignite the Yankees offensive attack.

Brian McCann has rebounded in a big way from last season, putting up 18 homers and is 10th in the AL in RBI, leading all American League catchers in homers, RBI and slugging.

Didi Gregorius struggled early on, but has come on in a big way both offensively and defensively. Gregorius has seen his batting average increase every month and he hit .317 this past July.

When the Yankees face a tough lefty, they can go to Chris Young who has crushed lefties all season long. He’s hitting .371 against them with a 1.127 OPS. Video game kind of stuff.

If the Yankees get in the playoffs, they certainly have the bats that can help carry them.
