Brett Phillips, OF, Milwaukee Brewers

Another late-rising prospect, Phillips has been a bit overlooked in Houston’s system but has done nothing but hit well over the past two years.

Phillips was a relative unknown when he was drafted in the 6th round back in 2012 and posted middling numbers until the end of 2013. As with many others from a football background, Phillips took a while to adjust to professional baseball before some exciting tools began to develop.

In Phillips’ second go-around at A-Ball in 2014, his wRC+ jumped from 63 to 148 per FanGraphs. He got better across the board at High-A later that season, posting a 156 wRC+.

After continuing to mash High-A pitching to start this season, Phillips continued his breakout in Double-A before being included in the Carlos Gomez deal. The 21-year-old posted a .321/.372/.463 line in 31 games, accelerating his ETA to the majors to potentially next summer.

Phillips offers a few tools, including plenty of power. He has 16 home runs between the two minor-league levels this season and ran an ISO of .268 at High-A before being promoted.

There’s also some speed here, as Phillips has totaled 38 stolen bases over the past two seasons. Couple that in with above-average defense in center field, and Phillips looks like he can be a valuable major-league player, if not a star.
