The Washington Redskins have been a source of mockery in recent weeks (and years). Quarterback Robert Griffin and his status as the backup quarterback has been the main topic of conversation, and on Wednesday, Griffin was shown a surprising amount of love at the Redskins’ luncheon, according to John Keim of ESPN.com. In fact, Griffin was given a standing ovation from approximately 600 people.

Griffin won the Redskins’ Salute Award, giving to him for his involvement with the military. Of course, Griffin also comes from a military background, with both of his parents having served. Per Keim, Griffin was emotionless when delivering his acceptance speech.

"“In the military, the one thing you have is your word,” Griffin said. “And when you give your word to somebody, you have to follow through. And I gave my word to my family, teammates and the military that I will always be there for them. Appreciate you guys.”"

Griffin was one of the most popular athletes in America during his 2012 season when he led the once-lifeless Redskins to an NFC East title. However, things have gone horribly wrong since due to injury and poor play, leaving Washington with only seven wins over the past two seasons.

At this point, it seems inevitable that Griffin will be playing elsewhere either this season, or certainly next. Kirk Cousins has been named the starter and head coach Jay Gruden has not committed to Griffin even being the second-string quarterback ahead of Colt McCoy. The team has an option on Griffin for 2016, but at over $15 million, it seems highly unlikely that will be picked up.
