Green Bay Packers Cornerback Sam Shields is out for today’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

There is unfortunate news for the Green Bay Packers defense as star cornerback Sam Shields is out for a marquee game with a shoulder injury against the undefeated Carolina Panthers, as reported by Ian Rapoport.

With a team-leading two interceptions, Shields is currently tied for first with rookie Quentin Rollins, who is also doubtful for today’s game with a neck injury. This unquestionably hurts the Packers defense, which is ranked 14th in the league in passing yards allowed.

Shields made the Pro Bowl for the first time last season after tallying two interceptions for a combined total of 62 yards and 11 passes defensed in addition to 36 tackles. In his place will likely be LaDarius Gunter, another undrafted rookie. Green Bay does have the luxury of not having to face an elite wide receiver on Sunday, with Kelvin Benjamin out for the season with a torn ACL sustained this summer.

Carolina’s main weapons on the outside are Corey Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. Neither are considered top targets, with quarterback Cam Newton usually looking to create with his legs, hand off to Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert, or throw to tight end Greg Olsen. Olsen is the only tight end, running back or wide receiver this season to play every snap for his team.
