The NFL suspended Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith for one year following an August incident.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith got some bad news on Tuesday, finding out the NFL is suspending him for a year following an incident in late August.

It is interesting that the NFL took so long to suspend Smith, the decision for a pre-season incident coming after nearly 10 weeks into the season. Smith violated the league’s substance-abuse policy, according to USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero.

Smith, quite frankly, was lucky to get a chance with the Raiders after a sting of bizarre incidents leading to his release by the San Francisco 49ers in early August. Smith has seemingly been well-behaved this year and kept himself out of the headlines while a player like Greg Hardy, who was suspended for the beginning portion of this season, has continuously put his foot in the math, had blow up on the sidelines and dug the hole deeper at every chance he got.

Smith has his own history as well, having been suspended for nine games last season for violating the league’s personal conduct and substance abuse policies.
