Chargers remove logo from field for the final time in San Diego?
Qualcomm Field looks like a completely field a day after the San Diego Chargers played their final home game of the season. Will it be their last ever?
The San Diego Chargers played their last home game of the season at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday, adding a convincing 30-14 win over the Miami Dolphins to their season record. And while that win won’t be enough to get the 4-10 Chargers into the NFL playoffs, it was certainly a nice send-off to the hometown fans during a tough season.
While the win meant a lot to both the team and the fans, it wasn’t lost on anyone the fact that this may be the final game played by the Chargers at Qualcomm. In fact, there was a stark reminder of that less than 24 hours after that victory, when all Chargers-related logos were removed from the field, as shared by Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
While the real reason the logos were removed was the fact that the field is being prepared for the Poinsettia Bowl, which is scheduled for December 23rd and will feature a match-up of the Boise State Broncos and the Northern Illinois Huskies, it was a reminder of what is to come for the city’s NFL franchise.
The Chargers are one of three teams that are in talks with the NFL about a potential move to a new Los Angeles facility, joining the Oakland Raiders and the St. Louis Rams as potential stadium partners in one of the countries biggest markets. While the NFL still has yet to decide on a final location and the two teams that will share it, plans are nonetheless moving forward for there to be two new teams in Los Angeles.
Will the Chargers be one of those teams? If so, will they return to Qualcomm Stadium for one more season before departing for Los Angeles?
The future is decidedly blank, much like the empty logo spots on the field.
