Quick Lane Bowl Odds & Prediction

Here are the odds and the against the spread pick for the Quick Lane Bowl!

The bowls are nearly half over, and though I haven’t watched all of them between holiday festivities and work, I don’t think I am off to that great of a start. My bowl mania picks were doing okay until Nebraska beat UCLA. I still have the against the spread picks to go, and from the looks of it, it will be a struggle to stay at .500 in bowl season.

In case you missed how the point scale works, here is a brief rundown:

5. A lock. I am comfortable making a sizable wager on this game.

4. Very confident. Not quite a lock, but I am comfortable making a decent sized wager on it.

3. Middle of the road. Good enough that I would make a small wager on it.

2. Could go either way. So much so that I wouldn’t bet on it.

1. Stay away from these.

Just in case you missed any:

Now on to the Quick Lane Bowl!

Central Michigan vs. Minnesota(-5.5) at Detroit, MI(3):

Central Michigan(7-5, 6-2):

Wins: vs. Monmouth(31-10), vs. Northern Illinois(29-19), vs. Buffalo(51-14), at Ball State(23-21), at Akron(14-6), at Kent State(27-14), vs. Eastern Michigan(35-28)

Losses: vs. Oklahoma State(13-24), at Syracuse(27-30), at Michigan State(10-30), at Western Michigan(39-41), vs. Toledo(23-28)

Record vs. bowl teams: 2-4

Minnesota(5-7, 2-6):

Wins: at Colorado State(23-20), vs. Kent State(10-7), vs. Ohio(27-24), at Purdue(41-13), vs. Illinois(32-23)

Losses: vs. TCU(17-23), at Northwestern(0-27), vs. Nebraska(25-48), vs. Michigan(26-29), at Ohio State(14-28), at Iowa(35-40), vs. Wisconsin(21-31)

Record vs. bowl teams: 2-7

The Chippewas rely on defense. Only Western Michigan with their outstanding passing game was able to top 30 points on them. They are a pass-first team with capable quarterback Cooper Rush. The line just needs to keep the aggressive Minnesota defense off of him.

The Gophers are one of the most tested teams in a bowl. They played nine games against bowl teams, and had the toughest Big Ten (14) schedule, facing every heavyweight but Michigan State. Only Northwestern and Ohio State were able to pull away from them. Mitch Leidner played much better through the second half of the year, but he was hurting against Iowa and Wisconsin, and will be at less than 100 percent here as well.

Both of the other 5-7 teams in bowl games have won. Will Minnesota do the same? Sure, they are tempered against better opponents, but they never beat one of those heavyweights. Neither team has a real convincing win. Central Michigan looked better in their win over Kent than the Gophers did. The other 5-7 teams with a chip on their shoulders played well, but Minnesota was the only 5-7 team I actually picked outright. I can’t really go back on that now, can I? Even though this is practically a home game for Central Michigan.

My pick: Minnesota
