MLB Rumors: Kansas City Royals sign starting pitcher Ian Kennedy to five year deal
The Kansas City Royals have reportedly agreed to terms with Ian Kennedy on a five year deal that includes a two year opt-out
The Kansas City Royals have been looking to upgrade the back end of their rotation as they will enter the 2016 MLB season trying to defend their World Series title. They have reportedly agreed to terms with free agent starting pitcher Ian Kennedy on a five year deal that includes an opt-out option after the second year.
From Yahoo Sports:
"The Royals and pitcher Ian Kennedy agreed to a $70 million, five-year deal Saturday that includes an opt-out after the first two years, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press."
The Royals will have to forfeit their first round draft pick in the 2016 MLB draft because Kennedy declined the qualifying offer extended to him by the San Diego Padres. Kennedy has struggled in recent seasons, but they are gambling on their defense, their pitcher-friendly ballpark, and their excellent pitching coach Dave Eiland can help Kennedy return to what he was with the Diamondbacks when he won 21 games in 2011 and 15 games in 2012.
Eiland will be tasked with helping Kennedy cut down on his home runs allowed. Pitching for the Padres, he allowed 31 home runs in just over 168 1/3 innings in 2015. He allowed 19 homers in 16 starts at Petco Park, which is one of the most pitcher friendly ballparks in the majors.
Kennedy should help the Royals back end of the rotation, albeit at a steep price and huge risk. If Eiland can work his magic with Kennedy, the deal could wind up being a good value for two years and Kennedy will opt out of it. If Kennedy continues to struggle, the Royals are likely stuck with him for five years.
