Super Bowl power rankings: Which winner is the greatest?
32. 1969 Kansas City Chiefs (SB IV)
Yet another team from a bygone era of professional football, the 1969 Kansas City Chiefs became the second team ever out of the AFL (and last before the merger, for what it’s worth) to win the Super Bowl. Unlike the Jets in the year prior, though, the 1969 Chiefs were a bit more dominating and impressive in going through the AFL to becoming the champions of pro football.
For starters, the Chiefs had a much more impressive 11-3 record in their AFL regular season. Though there were still only 10 teams in the league, Kansas City posted the second-best offense in the league and the No. 1 offense in the AFL for a top-ranking 13 points per game differential on the season. They were sound on both sides of the ball and performed quite well. However, the reason they aren’t penalized by playing in the AFL as much as the 1968 Jets is the fact that they had much more of an impressive playoff run.
The Chiefs, for starters, played three playoff games including the Super Bowl to become champions in comparison to only two for the Jets. Moreover, they outscored their opponents by combined score of 53-20 over those three games, simply looking inarguably like the better team. While they just miss out on the top-30, they certainly deserve a great deal of respect.
