NFL free agency: 10 best signings
By Rory Ostrow
4. Raiders sign LB Bruce Irvin
Contract: 4 years and $39 million, $12.5 million guaranteed
This move made a lot of sense for both parties. The Raiders were weak at OLB last year and Irvin will be a big upgrade to their defense. And Irvin wanted as much money as he could get. At 28 years old, this is likely the last major payday Irvin will see in his career. On top of that, the defensive coordinator of the Raiders, Ken Norton Jr., is an ex-LB coach for the Seahawks and a personal friend of Irvin.
Just like with the Osemele signing, the Raiders are a team with a ton of cap space so they can afford to spend big money in free agency. Irvin should be well worth the money. While his sack totals have been consistently good, Irvin’s coverage skills have improved significantly.
His veteran presence and good relationship with Ken Norton Jr. will be crucial for a young team still trying to figure things out. With this addition, the front seven of the Raiders is no longer a major weakness on their team. If they can find some help in the secondary, this team could be on the verge of doing great things over the next few years.
