2. 1989: Bo Knows All-Star Games
Back in the late 1980s, Bo Jackson was professional sports. An All-Pro running back for the Los Angeles Raiders, as well as an elite outfielder for the Kansas City Royals, Jackson was one of the best players in two major sports. He was accomplishing something that no-one had never been done, and at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 1989, he stole the show.
The game was held at Anaheim Stadium, which was the home of the California Angels. During introductions, Philadelphia PhillIes third baseman Mike Schmidt was honored, after being selected by the fans to start despite the fact that he retired on May 29.
The National League got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the top of the first off American League starter Dave Stewart. It did not take Jackson long to make his mark, as AL manager Tony LaRussa decided to bat him leadoff, and the move paid off.
On a 1-0 pitch against National League starter Rick Reuschel, Jackson blasted a 448 foot home run to center, landing halfway up the green tarp. The home run really impressed announcer Vin Scully, who was doing play-by-play with President Ronald Reagan in the first inning.
Jackson would also steal a base in the game, becoming the first player to homer and get a stolen base in an All-Star Game. The American League won the game 5-3, and Jackson was voted the game’s MVP.
