Florida Gators vs LSU Tigers: Highlights, score and recap
By John Buhler
The No. 23 Florida Gators defeated the No. 16 LSU Tigers on Saturday,16-10. Here are all the highlights, the game recap, and the final score.
The much-anticipated rescheduled gridiron affair between the No. 23 Florida Gators and the No. 16 LSU Tigers was an exciting defensive struggle as many expected it to be. It came down to the final play, but Florida’s goal line defense would stop LSU running back Derrius Guice to end the game, 16-10 Gators.
This win gives Florida back-to-back SEC East division titles. Florida head coach Jim McElwain becomes the first coach in SEC history to win his division both times in his first two seasons as head coach. LSU’s loss ends its slim hopes for a New Year’s Six bowl bid.
What was really the difference in this game was that Florida got big plays from its defense and special teams units and LSU did not. Florida kicker Eddy Pineiro made all three of his field goal attempts. LSU gaffed on a Colby Delahoussaye attempt, which ultimately led to the deciding play in the ball game.
Florida would gain possession on LSU’s botched field goal snap at its own two-yard line. Ineffective Florida quarterback Austin Appleby would muster his only good play of the afternoon and was it spectacular. Appleby would connect on a 98-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland to put Florida up 10-7.
LSU’s Danny Etling outplayed his former Purdue teammate Appleby at quarterback, but the Gators got it done in crucial point-scoring opportunities for the Tigers. The Gators will play the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2016 SEC Championship Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. LSU may not end up removing the interim tag on head coach Ed Orgeron after all.
Three Stars
- Gators’ defense/special teams: It’s near impossible to give this to one guy on the Florida defense and special teams unit. There were so many crucial plays that these two units made for the Gators to win the 2016 SEC East division title.
- Tyrie Cleveland: Cleveland had the signature catch in the ball game: a 98-yard touchdown pass from Appleby. Cleveland would have three catches for 124 yards and that touchdown.
- Jordan Scarlett: Scarlett was the bell-cow back Florida needed in this game. He had 22 carries for 108 yards on the ground.
