17. 1989 Oakland Athletics (Away)

The Oakland A’s have had some of the flashiest uniforms in Major League Baseball history. Late owner Charlie Finley is often credited with implementing the team’s white cleats and mix-and-match green and gold pants and top combinations from the 1970s, that while fun, weren’t often highly regarded.

Still, the Swingin’ A’s played great in those days, and won three straight World Series titles from 1972-74 with some of the greatest players – and personalities – in league history. While green and gold is a unique color combination in professional sports (especially outside Green Bay, Wisconsin) it can look very good when done well.

The A’s tweaked a few things in the 1980s, and developed a crisp white home uniform with a script “Athletics” across the chest. However, the road version is slightly better, especially when the team wears its customary gold-billed cap and helmet. There’s just something about seeing the script “Oakland” on a players chest that makes it the best possible uniform combination for the club.

The white cleats still look good (and if you don’t think so, ask the players across the majors that have been slowly adding primarily white cleats to their wardrobe). The elephant logo on the sleeve is a nice nod to the history of the franchise, which dates back to Philadelphia in 1901, and the gold sanitary socks (though largely extinct today) are one of the most recognizable aspects of any big league uniform.

Legendary A’s such as Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Dennis Eckersley and Dave Stewart wore that uniform, and also helped the team win its last World Series title in 1989.
