The 10 most disrespectful dunks in NBA history
8. Michael Jordan over Dikembe Mutombo
If anyone has ever told Michael Jordan that he could not do something, chances are he’s done it.
Just ask Dikembe Mutombo.
Shortly after taunting Michael Jordan about never having dunked on him during the 1997 All-Star game, Mutombo met his match.
Jordan settled the score and ended the trash talk with one simple jam later that season. Ironically enough, Jordan and Mutombo met in the 1997 Eastern Conference Semifinals, on a stage where everyone would be watching.
Jordan dumped off a pass to teammate Luc Longley and ran parallel to the baseline, knowing his intentions full well. He received a pass down low from Longley, blew past the Hawks’ Tyrone Corbin and took flight.
Mutombo reacted late to the dunk, but as rim protector, he couldn’t just let someone get an open look inside his territory. The 7-foot-2 center put a hand up, but MJ was determined. Jordan threw down the right-handed jam and added a little bit of salt to the wound as the crowd went bonkers.
Mutombo learned to never trash-talk Air Jordan ever again as Jordan performed Mutombo’s signature finger wag.
The dunk itself was routine, but remember, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
