2018 NFL Draft: Baltimore Ravens 7-round mock
By Conor Dorney
Josey Jewell was a tackling machine for the Iowa Hawkeyes, racking up over 100 tackles in each of the past three seasons, and would be a nice addition to the Ravens’ current linebacking corps.
Jewell won’t blow you out of the water with size (6-foot-1, 235 pounds) or athleticism like some of the linebackers in this class, but he is an extremely instinctual and fundamentally-sound player who displays excellent tackling technique. Jewell has a nose for finding the football, as evidenced by his gaudy tackling and pass deflection numbers during his Iowa career.
He lacks sideline-to-sideline speed and will struggle to stay with receivers in coverage, which could hinder his transition to the speed of the game at the NFL level. Jewell can also take too long to get off blocks but has the ability to make up for it by correctly reading where a play is going.
Jewell’s performance at the Combine, particularly in the speed and agility portions, will likely have a big impact on where he lands in the draft. If Baltimore is comfortable with those numbers, Jewell could be a nice value pick at inside linebacker in the middle of the third round. If they opt to continue with the offensive trend, expect to see another wide receiver with this selection.
