Olympics women’s hockey gets its quarterfinals underway when Switzerland takes on the Olympic Athletes of Russia
Finally, the medal round for Olympics women’s hockey has begun. The action starts on Friday, Feb. 16. At 10:10 p.m. ET, Switzerland takes on the Olympic Athletes of Russia. While the former got to the medal round by winning Group B, the latter finished in last place in Group A.
Switzerland enters as one of the most dominant teams in the tournament. Sure, they’ve also faced relatively weak competition in Group B. But it’s hard to argue with what Switzerland has done so far. Everyone put in front of the Swiss, their ladies have dominated. Switzerland is led by Alina Muller, who could be women’s hockey’s next star. She has six goals in three games, including four against Korea.
Meanwhile, the Olympic Athletes of Russia didn’t do well against Finland, the United States, or Canada. They got blown out of the group round. However, because of how the Olympics are set up, they still advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, the third and fourth-place teams from Group B are already in the loser’s bracket.
The winner of this game will go on to face Canada in the semifinals. Meanwhile, the loser will face Japan in the semifinals of the loser’s bracket.

This game will kick off the important part of women’s hockey. Switzerland has been a surprising success thus far while the Olympic Athletes of Russia have been disappointing. It should be interesting to see who wins.
If you’re Canadian, I’d advise rooting for the Olympic Athletes of Russia. Switzerland isn’t at the level of Team USA and Canada, but they’re getting pretty darn close.
