Colts trying to bolster secondary with Tre Boston, Bashaud Breeland visits

The Indianapolis Colts had an atrocious defense last year, and they are trying to remedy that situation by bringing in a host of defensive backs on visits.

Last season, the Colts were only able to win three games, largely because of their defense. The unit ranked 30th overall and 28th against the pass, giving general manager Chris Ballard ample reason to be aggressive in changing the personnel.

However, Ballard stood pat throughout the first and second waves of free agency, opting instead to hoard cap space. Now, with the NFL Draft behind him, Ballard is circling back in hopes of some quality value plays.

This week, the Colts have brought in safeties Tre Boston and Kenny Vaccaro for visits to Indianapolis, along with corner Bashaud Breeland. Breeland agreed with the Carolina Panthers on a three-year deal earlier this offseason, only to fail his physical as a result from a cut on his foot.

Only 26 years old, Breeland would certainly help perhaps the weakest group of corners in the league. If the season started today, the Colts would be trotting out a package of Quincy Wilson, Kenny Moore, Nate Hairston and Chris Milton. If you have no idea who any of those dudes are, that’s the point.

As for Boston and Vaccaro, both are solid safeties who would fill in alongside Malik Hooker nice. Hooker looked to be on his way as a first-round a year ago, only to suffer multiple torn knee ligaments midway through the season. Assuming Hooker can return at his previous level, a pairing with either of the aforementioned players would be a nice start in rebuilding what has been a rancid secondary.
