Eddie Ramirez drops unanimous decision to Argenis Mendez
Eddie Ramirez (17-1) returned to ring after his first defeat in 2017. He took on Argenis Mendez (24-5-1) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions fight card.
Eddie Ramirez was a hot super lightweight prospect, but he suffered an embarrassing first-round knockout loss to Antonio DeMarco in 2017. He returned to the ring for the first time since his lone defeat to fight Argenis Mendez in the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions telecast. It was an action fight that looked like it would end early.
Ramirez was active in round one. He stayed busy with his jab and used it to set up several scoring combinations. Mendez fired back several right hands that landed. Mendez’s hands looked powerful, but Ramirez scored more.
Ramirez pressed forward in the second round. He pinned Mendez against the ropes several times and did damage to the head and body. Mendez started to mount a counter-offensive midway through the round, but he didn’t throw many punches.
Just when it looked like Ramirez was dominating the round, Mendez caught Ramirez with an uppercut and floored him with a straight right. Ramirez was very hurt, but he got to his feet after the bell rang.
Mendez tried to finish Ramirez off early in the third. Ramirez’s legs looked shaky and he went down again less than a minute into the round. Ramirez got to his feet and survived the round despite going down early.
Ramirez looked recovered at the start of the fourth round. He was active early in the round, but none of his punches hurt Mendez. Ramirez continued his punch output throughout the round. It was his best showing since round one.
In round five, Ramirez started strong hitting Mendez to the body, but things changed quickly. Mendez put Ramirez on the canvas again with a left hook to the body. He got up but Mendez put him down a second time with a flurry. Ramirez survived but looked shot.
Ramirez landed a lot of punches on Mendez early in the sixth out of desperation. He was way behind on the cards and he fought on with courage. Ramirez channeled all of his energy to throw nonstop punches for the entire round. He showed a lot of heart and won the round.
Mendez was on his back foot in the seventh, but he timed Ramirez with a straight right that wobbled him. Ramirez stayed on his feet but he was hurt. They exchanged punches until the end of the round. It was a tough round to score, but Ramirez got the worst of it.
Mendez and Ramirez fought at close quarters in the eighth. They stood toe-to-toe as they traded shots. It was another close round, but Ramirez was more active. Mendez looked a little fatigued.
Ramirez attacked Mendez’s body in round nine. Mendez countered with a nice right, but he didn’t have the energy to follow it up. Ramirez was hurt, but Mendez couldn’t make him pay.
Ramirez landed a series of uppercuts to start the final round. Mendez stayed composed and landed several punches in return. They fought at a measured pace for the second half of the round. Ramirez finished the fight on his feet, which looked improbable in round two.
Ramirez has a lot of heart. He survived four knockdowns and fought well in spots throughout the fight, but he lost too many points to stand a chance of winning this fight on the scorecards. Mendez won by unanimous decision.
Ramirez suffered his second consecutive loss, which sets him back even further. He has a champion’s heart, but a journeyman’s chin. He’s an exciting fighter, but can’t take big punches.

Mendez, on the other hand, elevated his status. He’s a former super featherweight world champion and looked very good as a super lightweight. He has found a home at a higher weight class. He’s not known as a power puncher, but his power looked good as a super lightweight. He increased his fanbase with his performance against Ramirez.
