Steelers reveal throwback jersey for 2018

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be wearing a throwback jersey at Heinz Field on Oct. 28, and it will make fans of the Steel Curtain proud.

Every year, teams come out with new jerseys or throwback threads, and more often than not, we’re either underwhelmed or indifferent. For history nerds like yours truly, the Pittsburgh Steelers hit a home run and then some on Wednesday, when their Twitter account revealed that the team will wear its look from the 1970-90s on Oct. 28 when they host the Cleveland Browns.

The old uniform is being brought back to life for the first time since the team shelved it following the 196 season. The Steelers had ample success with the block-numbered look, winning four Super Bowls from 1974-79 behind Hall of Famers in Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount, Mike Webster, Franco Harris, Jack Ham, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, “Mean” Joe Greene and Jack Lambert.

Frankly, Pittsburgh ought to go back to this look. Yes, they are already wearing the black and gold, so it wouldn’t be a gigantic shift. Yes, they would look somewhat like the Iowa Hawkeyes. Doesn’t matter. The Steelers uniforms of yesteryear were classics because they meant winning, cold weather and Three Rivers Stadium. Nothing bad could come from bringing them back.

Pittsburgh has had success in the new duds, winning championships in 2005 and 2008. Still, classic is classic. The Steelers are doing the right thing by dusting them off in the first place. The next step is reinstating them quickly before we see the end of Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown in Pittsburgh.
