NBA Free Agency 2018: 5 potential destinations for Derrick Favors
By Bryan Harvey
2. Dallas Mavericks
The cap room is there, and Favors wouldn’t even eat up all of it.
More importantly, he could play the five next to Dirk Nowitzki and, because Dirk won’t play forever, he would insure the cupboard’s not entirely bare in the frontcourt upon franchise savior’s retirement.
By signing with Dallas, Favors would essentially be unhitching his wagon from one dynamite perimeter player and hitching it to another. Donovan Mitchell is currently the better player, but Dennis Smith’s future is also bright.
The numbers produced by Harrison Barnes and Derrick Favors would appear solid in the box score, but how they fit together would likely be a point of concern. Of course, this concern always circulates around such deliberate players in a league whose primary element is ever more fluid.
Dallas is in the process of rebuilding, but they are largely doing so without allowing the bottom to fallout, although there have been not so subtle muttering on tanking. The Dallas philosophy has also always consisted of having a bevy of talented bodies, not necessarily spectacular individuals, but individuals who collectively make for a very high floor. Adding a player like Favors would not be a bad way of restocking the old talent stores.
