5. Braves (+1)

The Braves have continued their success by going 6-4 over their last 10 games. However, they ended last week in a disappointing manner by losing 2-3 to the Orioles. They weren’t terribly offensively though and have no real reason for concern yet.

4. Brewers (+1)

The Brewers split series with the Pirates and Cardinals last week, as they didn’t do anything to take advantage of the Cubs struggles. However, they had very solid starting pitching outside of Sunday and that is a huge positive for them. With starting pitching being the biggest concern for the Brewers, it was good for them to see it.

3. Red Sox

The Red Sox are just a half game back of the Yankees in the division despite a mixed week last week. They lost a series to the lowly Twins but responded with a series win against the talented Mariners. We saw the best and worst of the Red Sox last week and if they are able to maintain the big bats that got them wins, they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

2. Yankees

The Yankees got swept by the Rays. That should be the only headline regarding last week for the Yankees, but similar to the Red Sox, it wasn’t just that. They swept the Mariners as they flexed their muscles against one of the best teams in baseball. Sure, the sweep at the hands of the Rays was disappointing, but 2 of those losses were because they weren’t hitting, something the Yankees don’t generally have to worry about.

1. Astros

While the other top two teams faltered last week, the Astros just kept chugging along. Series wins against the Rays and Royals were easy for the Astros who just keep cementing their status as the best team in the MLB. They have done nothing to cause reason for that opinion to be changed, so they remain atop this week’s MLB power rankings.
