2. Rudy Gay

Rudy Gay is 31 and a season removed from an Achilles tear. He last played for the Grizzlies half a decade ago. In every sense of the cliché, this would be kicking old tires.

The veteran wing averaged almost a dozen points in a reserve role for San Antonio last season. He opted out of an opportunity to stay in south Texas for $8.8 million. He would not be Memphis’ first choice. Memphis probably wouldn’t be his top choice either. Perhaps such a signing reeks too much of sentimentality, like some poorly written episode of Justified.

The appearance of Gay back in his old stomping grounds would, however, be a very Memphis thing to do, not so much rolling the clock back to the days of Grit ‘n Grind, but the days before, in an even older time, when Mike Fratello still roamed the earth.
