Off-Season Overview – Jacksonville Jaguars

“But I don’t WANNA write about the Jacksonville Jaguars!!!!!”- Me, about 30 minutes ago

Look. I don’t care that they made the AFC Championship last year. I don’t care that they have one of the fiercest defenses in the NFL.

I just can’t look at the word ‘Jaguars’ and not at least chuckle.

I mean they were the butt of just about all my NFL related mockery for what? A decade? Them and the Browns, anyway.

And now I’m supposed to just what … CHANGE all that, and view them as a perennial Super Bowl contender?

No.

No, no… NO!

I won’t do it.

And by the way, they haven’t proven that they’re a year-in year-out contender. The Jags had every chance to improve themselves this off-season. They could have gotten themselves a legit quarterback, and added some offensive weapons, and been ready to take on the world.

Instead, they re-sign Blake freaking Bortles… BORTLES??? Really?

And they let the Allen twins, Robinson and Hurns — who were the only thing making Bortles look … I won’t say GOOD, but I mean respectable I guess?? — go to the Bears and Cowboys. Meanwhile, the Jags wide receiving corps looks like a Wal-Mart bargain bin for three dollar movies of run-of-the-mill receivers. Lee, Moncrief, Westbrook, Cole, Mickens… none of them has sniffed 1,000 yards, albeit three of them are very young. Now you add DJ Chark to that muddied muck of mediocrity, and I don’t know, I can’t make heads or tails of it.

Alas …

Here we go!

I Gotta Have Me One of Those!

Leonard Fournette comes into his rookie campaign having answered any questions thrown his way about if his game would translate to the NFL. Not that there were many questions. But, going over 1,000 yards and scoring ten times automatically put him the top 7-10 range of running backs.

The defense is another year stronger, and depending on how your league calculates its defensive scoring, should probably be the number one D selected on draft day. Having the Texans, Colts and Titans to feast on helps. The first two of those clubs should be improved offensively in 2018, but something just always seems to happen in this division that makes all the teams in it fall short of expectations.

Buyer Beware

May I refer you back up to the ‘Off-Season Overview’ section?

I guess if you were going to take one receiver out of that group, Keelan Cole might be the one to roll the dice on. At least he has the most upside, taking past performance into account. Moncrief just kind of is what he is. Cole’s rookie campaign brought about 750 yards and he even saw the end zone a few times.

Other than that, when it comes to these wide receivers, I just say stay away.
