A mother’s love is a very powerful thing. That’s why Jalen Hurts’ mother took to Facebook to defender her son against criticism from Alabama fans.

it’s highly unlikely anything good is going to come from Jalen Hurts’ mother’s decision to take to social media to defend her son, but it’s happened anyway. Pamela Hurts elected to use Facebook to answer Alabama fans that reacted negatively to her son’s public criticism of the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff earlier this week.

Hurts expressed his disappointment in the fact that no coaches checked on his emotional wellbeing in the midst of the quarterback derby that’s dominated Alabama’s preseason practices. He and Tua Tagovailoa are locked in a tense battle to win the starting job. Hurts started for the Tide last season, but Tagovailoa came in the National Championship game to save his team.

Predictably, a certain sect of Alabama’s passionate fan base reacted pretty negatively to Hurts’ comments. That didn’t sit well with his mother. It’s highly unlikely her comments will make life easier on her son, but she made them anyway.

Interestingly, she claims, via Bama Insider, the Alabama Rivals site, there is a “reason players aren’t allowed to speak to the media.” Furthermore, she complimented her son for “speaking his truth” after “three years of being compliant and controlled.” The quarterback’s mother clearly believes there’s more unhappiness in the Alabama locker room than the public is currently aware of.

In fairness to the Tide program, that can be said about every locker room in America. Each team has a certain number of players who are unhappy about their place on the depth chart or the number of touches they get. It’s impossible for Nick Saban or any coach to keep every member of his squad happy all the time.

Even so, Hurts’ words raise legitimate questions about what’s going on behind closed doors in Tuscaloosa. The Alabama program does take things to another level by prohibiting their players from speaking to the media on a regular basis. Saban isn’t going to change that policy anytime soon, but it does open up the door for speculation on what’s really going on in the minds of his players.

Undoubtedly, Saban and the rest of his coaching staff are ready for the focus to return to competition on the field. That’s where the Alabama program is at its best.
