It was a rough weekend no matter what. I at least hoped Oklahoma would put up a fight. Despite Alabama not covering, Oklahoma was never really in that game.

For the rest of the bowls, you will get my picks against the spread and point wagers just like I did all season long. I had a solid regular season, but I can make it look a whole lot better with a strong bowl season!

(15)Texas vs. (5)Georgia(-12.5) at New Orleans, LA(2):

Texas 9-4, 7-3(2nd Big 12(10)

Wins: vs. Tulsa(28-21), vs. USC(37-14), vs. TCU(31-16), at Kansas State(19-14), vs. Oklahoma(48-45), vs. Baylor(23-17), at Texas Tech(41-34), vs. Iowa State(24-10), at Kansas(24-17)

Losses: vs. Maryland(29-34), at Oklahoma State(35-38), vs. West Virginia(41-42), vs. Oklahoma(27-39)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-3

Sam Ehlinger was born to play quarterback for Texas. Just ask him. It’s all he ever wanted to do. The numbers he put up this season have Texas a year or two ahead of schedule after the dark ages of Charlie Strong. The emergence of Keaontay Ingram helped the running game, and Texas has some huge receivers. Not only that, but they are strong too.

The thing that really stands out for me for Texas is that nine of their 13 games were decided by a touchdown or less. Their three regular season losses were by a combined nine points. This team is battle tested in close games, and often came out on the right side of it.

Georgia 11-2, 7-2(2nd SEC)

Wins: vs. Austin Peay(45-0), at South Carolina(41-17), vs. Middle Tennessee State(49-7), at Missouri(43-29), vs. Tennessee(38-12), vs. Vanderbilt(41-13), vs. Florida(36-17), at Kentucky(34-17), vs. Auburn(27-10), vs. Massachusetts(66-27), vs. Georgia Tech(45-21)

Losses: at LSU(16-36), vs. Alabama(28-35)

Record vs. bowl teams: 8-2

This Georgia offense took a step back from last year. Of course, that happens when you lose two guys who are now starting in the NFL in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield are very good runners as well, but they aren’t on that level set. Perhaps the worst thing was a slight regression from Jake Fromm. The lack of a big play receiver didn’t help either.

The Georgia defense is still a strong unit. The loss of Deandre Baker from that unit will hurt some, especially against the big Texas receivers.

Prediction:

On paper, this may be almost as much of a mismatch as Vegas thinks it is. However, this season is already a success for Texas under Tom Herman. Georgia had thought of the playoff since they played the best game of the season against Alabama in the SEC Championship. News flash: That WAS a playoff game! How Georgia lets most ES(EC)PN analysts get inside their heads about what they deserved is going to determine this game. If Georgia is disinterested, they might lose this outright.

Georgia had trouble with Bama’s receivers. Same with Missouri and LSU. Texas’s bunch may be better than all of them. I don’t see this as a blowout. I think this game stays within a touchdown. I picked Texas outright in Bowl Mania, but I may flip that pick after watching the Big 12(10) come up limp in bowl games. I still don’t think Georgia covers though.

Pick: Texas
