(11)LSU(-7.5) vs. (8)Central Florida at Glendale, AZ(4):

LSU 9-3, 5-3(t-2nd SEC West)

Wins: vs. Miami(FL)(33-17), at Southeast Louisiana(31-0), at Auburn(22-21), vs. Louisiana Tech(38-21), vs. Mississippi(45-16), vs. Georgia(36-16), vs. Mississippi State(19-3), at Arkansas(24-17), vs. Rice(42-10)

Losses: at Florida(19-27), vs. Alabama(0-29), at Texas A&M(72-74)

Record vs. bowl teams: 5-3

Joe Burrow proved to be more than a game manager when LSU got involved in the highest scoring football game in NCAA history. This is still a team that would rather run the ball. Nick Brossette isn’t Leonard Fournette, but he is still a very good back. LSU got a break when Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was involved in an attempted robbery over the weekend, was cleared to play in this game. He ran for 626 yards this season, and they are going to need him. More on that later.

This defense is a very strong unit that will be weaker than it has been all season. Kristian Fulton is hurt, Kelvin Joseph is suspended, and Greedy Williams is sitting out for the draft, so the secondary is particularly beaten up.

Central Florida 12-0, 9-0 (1st AAC)

Wins: at Connecticut(56-17), vs. South Carolina State(38-0), vs. Florida Atlantic(56-36), vs. Pittsburgh(45-14), vs. SMU(48-20), at Memphis(31-30), at East Carolina(37-10), vs. Temple(52-40), vs. Navy(35-24), vs. Cincinnati(38-13), at South Florida(38-10), vs. Memphis(56-41)

Losses: NONE

Record vs. bowl teams: 7-0

The undefeated record is a little soft. UCF only played one team that was ranked at the time. None of them are currently ranked. Something can be said for winning all of your games, but something can also be said for playing a soft schedule. They are actually lucky that they didn’t play 2-9 North Carolina because of a hurricane. It would have actually weakened the schedule more!

The loss of McKenzie Milton is huge. He is the guy that made all things possible with this team. Backup Darriel Mack brought the Knights back from a big first half deficit to take down Memphis again and put themselves in a New Years Six Bowl. Mack is going to be fine. The offense was never the issue this year.

It was the defense. Lost in the video game numbers that McKenzie Milton put up is just how bad this defense was, particularly in stopping the run.

Prediction:

This is one of the worst matchups for UCF. Their Achilles Heel is run defense, and they draw one of the best running teams in all of college football. Not only that, they have to tangle with a pretty tough LSU defense. That said, if Darriel Mack can get the ball to those receivers on the outside, UCF can put up some points here.

I don’t think Greg McRae is anywhere near Trayveon Williams, so don’t expect UCF to run over LSU like the Aggies did. I also see the LSU backs as even better than the Memphis backs. I don’t really like the half since I think UCF is going to show up for this game. I also don’t see the UCF defense coming up with many stops on third down. They are going to get worn out.

Pick: LSU
