Mississippi State(-6.5) vs. Iowa at Tampa, FL(4):

Mississippi State 8-4, 4-4(4th SEC West)

Wins: vs.Stephen F. Austin(63-6), at Kansas State(31-10), vs. Louisiana(56-10), vs. Auburn(23-9), vs. Texas A&M(28-13), vs. Louisiana Tech(45-3), vs. Arkansas(52-6), at Mississippi(35-3)

Losses: at Kentucky(7-28), vs. Florida(6-13), at LSU(3-19), at Alabama(0-24)

Record vs. bowl teams: 4-4

Whenever your quarterback leads your team in rushing and you don’t have an option offense, you know you’re in trouble. Nick Fitzgerald is the offense, and this team struggled when he was kept under wraps. That’s why they lost to a who’s who of SEC defenses in Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, and LSU.

This defense is as good or better than any of those mentioned before. The list of teams to hold Alabama under 25 points is one team long. This one.

Iowa 8-4, 5-4(t-2nd Big Ten(14) West):

Wins: vs. Northern Illinois(33-7), vs. Iowa State(13-3), vs. Northern Iowa(38-14), at Minnesota(48-31), at Indiana(42-16), vs. Maryland(23-0), at Illinois(63-0), vs. Nebraska(31-28)

Losses: vs. Wisconsin(17-28), at Penn State(24-30), at Purdue(36-38), vs. Northwestern(10-14)

Record vs. bowl teams: 3-4

Nate Stanley is a good quarterback and this team took off offensively when Mekhi Sargent started getting most of the carries. Sargent finished off the season with back to back games of more than 130 rushing yards.

Iowa may have the best tight end tandem in the country. Noah Fant and T.J. Hockenson were the two leading receivers on the team, and it wasn’t close.

Iowa’s defense was strong most of the season as well. A few teams did hit 30 on them though. That has to be a bit concerning heading into a game like this.

Prediction:

This has the lowest over/under of Bowl season with good reason. Mississippi State allowed ten points or fewer in seven of the 12 games and didn’t allow more than 28. This Iowa offense isn’t going to be one of the ones that scores in the 20’s and I have serious questions as to whether Iowa can hold Fitzgerald. The over/under is now at 40.5, and I’m kind of inclined to take the under. I also am taking Mississippi State to cover.

Pick: Mississippi State
