The Wizards traded Otto Porter Jr. to the Bulls for what?

One day before the NBA trade deadline, longtime Wizard Otto Porter has at last been shipped out of the capital city.

Throughout the week leading up to the NBA trade deadline on Feb. 7, much of the discussion has been about whether or not Anthony Davis would dealt out of New Orleans, as he requested. But during that time, not much trading has actually gone down.

That all changed on Wednesday, however, as now two big trades have taken place. The Philadelphia 76ers made somewhat of a splash by acquiring Tobias Harris from the Los Angeles Clippers to boost their already loaded starting five, and now the Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls have gotten into the trade action as well.

After spending some time in the rumor mill, Otto Porter is officially on his way out of Washington. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Porter is headed to Chicago in exchange for Jabari Parker and Bobby Portis.

It was unsure if the Wizards (22-31) would actually go through with breaking up their core three of Porter, John Wall and Bradley Beal. But following a season-ending injury to Wall this year, and with any hopes of making a playoff run quickly dissipating, this was as good of a time as any for Washington to make a move.

One big thing they’ll be getting off their hands is Porter’s contract, in which they would owe him $27 million next year with a player option for $28.5 million for the 2019-20 season. Porter had been with the Wizards since being drafted third overall by them in 2013.

The Bulls, meanwhile, are in the midst of a “tanking” season at just 12-41. Their focus is to build a winning team around young star Lauri Markannen, but it will likely be a few years of good drafting before a contender starts to take shape.

They drafted Portis 22nd overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, and had signed Parker, a Chicago-native who had spent his first four seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, to a two-year deal prior to this season.
