The USWNT was tested throughout the knockout stages of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, but they once again emerged as champions. Now, they have the largest lead in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Ranking.

From Crystal Dunn’s relentless defend to Megan Rapinoe’s impervious leadership, the USWNT had no shortage of standouts in another dominant World Cup performance.

Spain, France, and England all had their chances to defeat the United States and gave the defending champions quite a scare, but the USWNT showed their resiliency in tough games before beating Netherlands “Golden Glove” winner Sari van Veenendaal (remember the name) twice in the final to capture a second straight World Cup title and fourth overall.

FIFA have released their Women’s Ranking of all the international squads after the conclusion of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and it’s no surprise to see that the champions are first. But what’s notable about the USWNT’s lead is that, by points, they have the biggest lead at the top of the rankings in history.

The United States were bumped up from 2101 points to 2180, while second-placed Germany went slightly down from 2072 to 2059. That gives the USWNT a 121-point lead, which is the same point difference between Germany and Brazil (1938 points) in 10th place.

This is yet another testament to the USWNT’s absolute dominance in international football, and what makes this more impressive is that women’s football is the most competitive it has ever been. Outside of a 13-0 win over Thailand in the first game, the USWNT never blew out any of their other opponents, as even first-time World Cup qualifiers Chile shut out the United States in the second half. Elsewhere in the rankings, the Netherlands jumped all the way from eighth to third after making it in the finals, winning all of their games until they faced the United States. France is in fourth, England fell down to fifth after losing the third-placed game to Sweden, and the Swedes made a big move from ninth to sixth. South Korea had the biggest tumble, falling from 14th to 20th.

FIFA will release updated rankings in late September. As it stands right now, the United States, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria, and Australia are the leaders by region.
