18. Brock Purdy, Iowa State

Iowa State has shuffled through promising quarterbacks in recent seasons, but none showed the promise of Brock Purdy after he took over the starting job in 2018 as a freshman.

With the Oct. 6 game against Oklahoma State, Purdy came through with 318 yards and four touchdowns on 18-for-23 passing in an upset over Oklahoma State. It was not an anomaly, either, as he walked into a home game against West Virginia, who had their own success, and won.

Purdy’s winning streak lasted five games and locked him in as not only the starter for 2018 but into 2019, with a 66.4 overall completion percentage, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. This brought the Cyclones to another surprisingly good year in the Big 12 and placed this young quarterback on the map.

2019 will be Purdy’s first full go-around, with the chance to join the conference’s top quarterbacks, pending he makes the jump. It remains difficult for Iowa State to stake their claim with Oklahoma and Texas, but they can at least make these matchups interesting this fall, with the help of the sophomore thrower.

Either way, Iowa State will have their answer to the other quarterbacks the Big 12 puts out there. He may have to find new targets to throw to, but there is an opening for success.
