How the WWE Four Horsewomen changed women’s wrestling
The Man Comes Around
The story is almost legendary now. After failing P.E. in school and wandering aimlessly through her young life, Becky Lynch found a love for wrestling. When she first started training it was nothing like she expected but she fell in love with every aspect of it and vowed that one day she would main event WrestleMania.
At the time a close friend told her, “It’s nice to have dreams but be realistic.” Lynch can remember every detail of that conversation because it became a motivator for her to prove them wrong. So when the time came for her to show her worth in NXT she did just that.
As a member of the Four Horsewomen, Lynch along with Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair and Bayley set the world on fire with exceptional wrestling skill and off the charts charisma. It wasn’t long before Lynch was called to the main roster and drafted to SmackDown Live to become their inaugural Women’s Champion. But after a while her marquee value began to be overlooked and the dream of main-eventing WrestleMania someday started to fade.
Undaunted, Lynch continued to put solid work in whenever she was asked to all while biding her time for the next opportunity. She knew that when the time was right she was going to capitalize and show everyone she belonged on top.
That time came at SummerSlam 2018 when she slapped long-time friend and fellow Horsewoman, Charlotte, upside the head. Lynch was meant to turn heel that day but the eruption from the crowd said otherwise. They were solidly behind her no matter what she did and her tough-talking “The Man” persona sparked a movement that would forever change the landscape in pro wrestling.
Lynch went on to become the first-ever female Superstar to grace the cover of WWE 2K20; the first Superstar male or female to grace the cover of ESPN The Magazine; first female Superstar in a Last Woman Standing match; first female Superstar in a TLC match; first and only female Superstar to hold both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships; and yes, she realized her goal and became the first woman to main event WrestleMania where she had another first, being the first woman to pin Ronda Rousey in WWE.
During an episode of NXT when she was gearing up for her first title shot Lynch said: “I’m not here to take part, I’m here to take over.”
She has taken over and changed the game forever.
