Upset Alert: 5 college football teams in danger of losing in Week 12
1. Georgia Bulldogs
Rank: 4 | Opponent: 12 Auburn Tigers | Time: Saturday, Nov. 16, 3:30 p.m. ET
The biggest controversy coming out of the latest College Football Playoff rankings reveal was the Georgia Bulldogs, a one-loss team whose lone defeat came against a middling (at best) South Carolina team, jumping ahead of Alabama after they lost their first game of the season against LSU, the top-ranked team. Crimson Tide fans have cried foul all week and they have some merit to their claims.
Not only does Georgia’s one loss on the season look worse than Alabama’s but it could be said that their marquee wins of the year are not all that impressive. The six-point win over Notre Dame looks a lot worse than it did at the time given how the Fighting Irish have performed since. And beating Florida in a rivalry game is good but it feels fair to say the Gators are good-not-great.
If the Bulldogs want to prove they’re worth their ranking, though, they have the opportunity to do so as they hit the road to Jordan-Hare Stadium in Week 12 to face the No. 12 ranked Auburn Tigers. As up-and-down as freshman quarterback Bo Nix has been this season, Auburn’s run game and their defense are tremendous factors that could really push Georgia to the brink in this game.
With Georgia’s interior offensive line playing suspect football to this point, Auburn’s elite defensive front can cause them a world of trouble. And if the Dawgs are unable to run the ball consistently and effectively, it will come down to Jake Fromm carrying the team, which can be a tricky proposition. But if Nix and the Auburn rushing offense have any success, the Tigers can finally get over the hump and pick up a massive upset victory that shakes up the College Football Playoff once again.
