NFL free agency 2020: Best cornerbacks available
The 2020 NFL offseason has begun and teams are already making key decisions. Here are the top cornerbacks that could hit the open market on March 18.
In a little over a month, the NFL new fiscal year begins at 4:00 pm ET. In the meantime, all 32 franchises are making important decisions in preparation for free agency and the NFL draft.
Of course, it’s that time of the year when players are released by teams to save salary cap room. Such is the case when it comes to cornerback Josh Norman, cut loose by the Washington Redskins and now able to sign with another team immediately.
As for the five players on this list, clubs will have to wait until mid-March when their contracts officially expire. Of course, a few of these standouts may not make it to the open market. But for now, here are five cornerbacks that figure to garner a lot of attention should they become free agents.
5. Byron Jones (Dallas Cowboys)
He is most certainly one of those players on Jerry Jones’ wish list in terms of hoping his team can retain his services. Of course, the always-interesting Dallas Cowboys have some pretty prominent names on their potential unrestricted free agent list. It’s a ledger highlighted by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper. So where does highly regarded cornerback Byron Jones stand in terms of the pecking order?
The 27th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft comes off a season in which he finished with 44 tackles, one forced fumble and six passes defensed. And for the third time in five years, Jones did not pick off a pass. In fact, the former University of Connecticut standout has only two interceptions during his NFL career. But he remains one of the most well-versed cornerbacks in the league and certainly on any number of clubs’ wish lists should he become available.
