Like New York, Washington needed to make several impact moves in free agency this offseason in order to keep up the pace in the NFC East, as the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys are clearly on another level from the other teams in the division.

Instead, Washington didn’t supply Ron Rivera with much beyond cornerback Kendall Fuller, who is coming off a solid, Super Bowl-winning season in Kansas City. They should have aggressively pushed to reunite Rivera with top cornerback James Bradberry, but they had to settle for Fuller after losing Bradberry to a comparable rival in the Giants.

Fuller has the potential to shine brightly under Rivera, though, as does less-heralded signing Sean Davis. While Davis never put it together with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he has all the tools to develop into something under Rivera.

Meanwhile, Washington needs to do a better job of dealing with underpaid players, as giving Quinton Dunbar, who is one of the league’s most underrated corners, a raise sounds better than trading him for a mid-round pick.

Washington did well to franchise star offensive lineman Brandon Scherff, keeping one of the best in the business for at least one more year. But their other signings beyond Fuller were uninspiring. It will be another long year in the nation’s capital for football fans.
