5 players who the Chicago Bears need to be great in 2020
By Ryan Fedrau
Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky is on his last chance in Chicago. If he beats Nick Foles for the starting job, he needs to be more than great to keep it. I very well could see Trubisky beating Foles for the job and having a successful season. We’ve already seen Trubisky at his best.
Trubisky was a pro bowl quarterback in 2018, while also having the third-best QBR in the NFL. I wouldn’t say 2018 was great for Trubisky, because I believe he has a next level that needs to be tapped into.
If Trubisky is great in 2020, the Bears will go far. People can try to sell that teams can win without a solid quarterback in this league, but you’ll only get so far with an average quarterback. Last season, Trubisky had an average year, due to many factors going against him.
One key factor was friction with Matt Nagy. Trubisky and Nagy need to rebuild their relationship during the offseason. A healthy relationship between a quarterback and a head coach is a recipe for success.
For Trubisky to be great in 2020, he needs to build an on-field relationship with Cole Kmet and Jimmy Graham. The two starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl last year threw to their tight ends a lot during the season. Both Travis Kelce and George Kittle would have been in the 2019 pro bowl if they didn’t play in the Super Bowl.
Along with working with his tight ends, Trubisky has to stay healthy. A lot of what Trubisky could do on the field was limited last season, due to his shoulder being injured. If Trubisky can stay healthy, the 2018 Trubisky will return in 2020.
Foles pushing for Trubisky’s job should make him a better quarterback. If Trubisky can win the starting job, he’ll have Foles as a mentor. Foles helped mentor Carson Wentz during his MVP season and Gardner Minshew last season with the Jaguars. If some of that Foles magic rubs off on Trubisky, he can and will be great in 2020.
