Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence is literally the definition of thriving under pressure
By John Buhler
Trevor Lawrence handles pressure better than any college quarterback.
When it comes to pressure, Trevor Lawrence is as cool as the other side of the pillow.
For a guy who has one career loss on his resume, and that came in the national championship last season, Lawrence knows what it takes to win every Saturday his team takes the field. Projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence is proving with his off-the-field leadership he’s worth of that top selection. He’s also got this one stat working for him in his favor.
According to PFF, of all the returning quarterbacks in college football, Lawrence has the most completed touchdown passes under pressure with nine. Nine times did Lawrence complete a pass with a dude or two in his face that went for six points. This is what you are hoping for with a star quarterback in college and the face of the franchise at the professional level.
Trevor Lawrence handles pressure better than your college quarterback.
Though this stat may be misleading for a few reasons, there is a lot to glean from it. Nine completed touchdown passes in the face of pressure doesn’t seem like a lot, but that’s still nine big-time throws on Lawrence’s resume.
We have to wonder how many more big-time throws Lawrence can rifle for six as a junior. If we set the bar very low, 12 should be attainable. 16 might be a sweet number, but it all really depends on the level of competition Clemson faces more than anything. If the ACC ups the ante in 2020, Lawrence might have a few more opportunities to pull off these high-pressure throws.
The reason he should be able to rattle off at least 12 is he’ll be a year older, a year wiser and have another year’s worth of starting experience. He’ll have an even better grasp of the Clemson offense, unafraid to let it rip when the opposing team’s star pass-rusher is sprinting right toward him. Look for Lawrence to step up in the pocket and deliver aerial strike after aerial strike in 2020.
Pressure isn’t his middle name, but Lawrence is the definition of thriving in it as a quarterback.
