The Toronto Blue Jays will look to stave off elimination as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of their MLB Wild Card Round clash.

The Tampa Bay Rays got the better of their AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of their series on Tuesday, and under the new playoff format, they now have a chance to advance to the second round of the postseason for the second consecutive year with a win in Game 2.

Will the underdog Jays be able to force a decisive Game 3 against the top-seeded Rays? Here’s what to expect in the high-stakes showdown.

What to watch for in Game 2 between the Blue Jays and Rays

The two squads managed to muster just four total runs of offense in Game 1, and based on the pitching matchup for Wednesday’s game, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect even less out of the bats. Toronto ace Hyun-Jin Ryu will toe the rubber against his Tampa Bay counterpart Tyler Glasnow in one of the most tantalizing pitching duels of the first round.

Ryu finished the year with an impressive 2.69 ERA and 72 strikeouts across 12 starts. Undoubtedly the Blue Jays’ biggest signing of the offseason, he was key to their return to playoff baseball, and they’ll lean on him to keep their World Series hopes alive.

As for the Rays, Glasnow wasn’t quite the pitcher that dominated MLB in 2019, but don’t let his 4.09 ERA fool you. He still managed to register an eye-popping 14.3 K/9 in the shortened season, and if he finds his form in Game 2, he could see the Rays through to the next round.
