1. Marvin Wilson, Defensive Tackle, Florida State

The Chiefs need to find another impact interior defensive lineman to take some pressure off Chris Jones. Wilson is one defensive tackle prospect who’s going to garner a lot of interest during the pre-draft process. Kansas City needs to make sure they evaluate him based on his tape rather than his raw athleticism or measurables.

Wilson has all the physical gifts required to succeed at the NFL level, but his production at Florida State never seemed to match his natural talent. That’s particularly strange because he appears to be a player who expends a lot of effort on the field.

The only logical explanation for his lack of production is he isn’t a great football player. He plays with poor leverage and his punch at the point of attack is not good enough to overcome those issues. It’s possible Wilson can improve with better coaching at the next level, but that’s a gamble too big for Kansas City to take at the end of Round 1.

There will be other defensive tackle prospects available that can provide the Chiefs with a better combination of upside and certainty. Wilson just doesn’t do enough to merit consideration. He’s a mid-round prospect that’s going to be selected higher than that based on his name value. Kansas City shouldn’t be the team guilty of making that mistake.
